(For the record, I'm a Simon & Garfunkel fan.)

The Real Reason They Still Play 'Mrs. Robinson' On The Radio

Stations haven't been playing "Mrs. Robinson" for 32 years just because everyone likes Simon & Garfunkel (although I really do love them!). It's because 80% of stations' playlists match all across the country. So much for thinking that media exposes us to new and different ideas, eh?

====================================

In 1983, 90% of American media was owned by 50 companies.

In 2011, that same 90% was owned by 6 companies:
  • GE
  • News-Corp (Murdoch : Fox), also owns the top newspaper on 3 continents
  • Disney Viacom
  • Time Warner
  • CBS

The big six control 70% of your cable.

In 1995, the FCC forbade companies to own more than 40 stations, yet Clear Channel owns 1,200 stations.
