Tropical Depression Thirty-One has become better organized and formed Friday morning.
This system is expected to become a tropical storm by Friday night as it slowly tracks toward the western Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center. When it strengthens into a tropical storm, it would be named Iota.
Potential future Iota would be the 30th storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which is two more storms than the previous record for a season set in 2005.
