Presidential debate

I listened to the presidential debate on the radio, so I didn't know until I heard a joke about it on "Wait, wait don't tell me" that the president was making notes during the debate. It seems to me the obvious possibility is that there is some serious problem going on that requires the president's attention, and that caused him to give less than full attention to a debate. If anybody has mentioned that possibility, I haven't seen or heard it.
