Rick Scott calls Gaetz’s tweet threatening Cohen 'embarrassing,' 'disgusting'

Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) said it was “disgusting” for his Republican colleague Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) to send a tweet appearing to threaten former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen the night before Cohen's congressional testimony.

Scott, the former governor of Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times that Gaetz’s actions this week were “embarrassing.”

“We shouldn’t be doing that stuff up here. You might not like what somebody is going to say but you shouldn’t be trying to intimidate them or their family, it’s wrong,” Scott said. “I think it’s disgusting and I’m glad he apologized.”

Scott was referring to a Tuesday tweet that Gaetz wrote questioning Cohen’s faithfulness to his wife one day before Cohen’s scheduled appearance before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

“Hey @MichaelCohen212 — Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends?” Gaetz wrote in the now-deleted tweet. “Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…”

The Florida Bar confirmed Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into whether Gaetz, a licensed attorney in the state, violated professional conduct rules with his tweet.
