As the climate changes, inmates without air-conditioning have no escape from extreme heat.
Lance Lowry, head of the state correctional officer union, said that the number of attempted suicides among prisoners usually rises in the summer — 93 in March 2015 versus 130 in August, for example — and that prisoners avoid taking psychotropic medications, thus increasing the risk of psychotic breaks that put staff at risk. “I don’t have love for these people,” he said. But “the incarceration is their punishment, not cooking them to death.”
