In preliminary data which combined daily high and low temperatures of major reporting stations across Alaska, July was very likely the state's hottest month on record. It easily topped the previous record from July 2004, according to Dr. Brian Brettschneider, an Alaska-based climatologist at the International Arctic Research Center.

Parts of the Northeast also set new all-time hottest-month records.

That included Boston, which soared past its previous monthly record from July 1983.

Yet the official reporting station near Logan Airport never recorded a single daily record-high temperature during the month. Instead, the heat's persistence was the story.

Boston racked up 12 days of 90-degree-plus high temperatures in July, almost as many as the city averages in an entire year (13), and double the number of days with highs in the 70s.

Overnight lows were also oppressive at times.

The city's low temperature dropped only to 80 degrees on July 20, then 83 degrees the following day, tying an all-time record-hot daily low temperature from Aug. 2, 1975.

Numerous other locations in the East, as well as Arizona and New Mexico, had one of the five hottest Julys, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center.

Parts of the southern Plains, northern High Plains and Northwest were somewhat cooler than average, according to the Prism Climate Group's analysis.
