Ga., like the nation, trapped in an ideology of decline

However, it’s the reaction to our situation that tells us how dire things have gotten. We still like to tell ourselves that we are the richest, most prosperous nation on earth, yet we also tell ourselves that we can’t afford what our competitors can afford. It's not a lack of resources, it's a lack of will and willingness to sacrifice.

It's also funny -- in a sad sort of way -- to see people build policy on the assumption that Georgia state legislators would offset the loss of federal revenue by voting to raise state taxes. There is no basis for such a belief, and as a former state legislator, Graves knows it. In a state whose economy has always been focused on transportation, we now rank 49th in per capita transportation spending.
