I suppose now is as good a time as any to point out that while the House of Representatives was giving the Capitol Police a well deserved standing ovation for keeping them safe, they were doing so while those officers are going unpaid thanks to the shutdown. While the police are considered "essential" personnel, requiring them to report to work, the rules of the shutdown do not allow for them to be paid. So, while the right side of the aisle was standing and clapping their hands in thankfulness for the cloak of protection those officers provide, they were doing so knowing that THEIR own paychecks continue unabated and the Capitol Police are working for free. Not only that, when they do eventually come around to ratifying the budget they have already agreed upon (minus the Obamacare bullshit), they will do so at sequester levels. Meaning some of those officers will be furloughed when the shutdown is over.
