Fire crews relied on slurry bombers and helicopters Friday to battle the Monument Fire that's been roaring through canyons outside of Sierra Vista in southern Arizona for the past several days.

Some of the more than 800 personnel and 70 engines were temporarily diverted to a brush fire that broke out about 2:15 p.m. on the southeast side of nearby Fort Huachucha.

The Monument Fire nearly doubled in size from a day ago, leading officials to draw a larger evacuation area. Authorities concentrated heavily Friday on Miller Canyon, as the fire continued to move north and northeast from its origin Sunday.

Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday declared a state of emergency for Cochise County because of the Monument and the Horseshoe Two fires, freeing up $100,000 in state funds and authorizing her to deploy the National Guard to the area, should it become necessary.

Another fire in southeastern Arizona, the Horseshoe Two Fire, neared 200,000 acres Thursday as crews continued working to protect structures. It was 65 percent contained.
