An 11-year-old girl from the Czech Republic was born with genes that came almost entirely from her father, instead of half from each parent.
Only about 25 people in the world — all girls — have been reported with this genetic syndrome, and the Czech girl appears to be the first to have inherited it without developing cancer.

At least 155 people have died in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain in western Japan, says the government.
It is the highest death toll caused by rainfall that Japan has seen in more than three decades.
Rescuers are now digging through mud and rubble in a race to find survivors, as dozens are still missing.
About two million people have been evacuated from the region after rivers burst their bank
There remains a risk of landslides, with rain-sodden hilltops liable to collapse.
More than 70,000 rescue workers, including the fire service and the army, are involved in the relief effort.

Two members of an Oregon church that shuns traditional medicine in favor of prayer and anointing the sick with oils pleaded guilty Monday to negligent homicide and criminal mistreatment in the death of their newborn daughter, who struggled to breathe for hours as family and friends prayed over her but did not seek medical care.
It marked the fifth criminal case in Clackamas County, south of Portland, involving the death of a child from the religious community known as the Followers of Christ Church.
The Mitchells' other twin daughter, Evelyn, survived after a deputy medical examiner called to the house for the other baby's death noticed that she also was struggling to breathe.
The church drew criticism in 1998 after The Oregonian analyzed the deaths of 78 children buried in the church's graveyard since 1955. At least 21 could have been saved by medical intervention, the newspaper found.
