Prosecutors aiding exonerations

This is good news, since there have been so many cases of prosecutors and police hiding evidence of people's innocence, resulting in innocent people spending long periods of time in prison, sometimes on death row.

Prosecutors are increasingly aiding exonerations of innocent men and women, a fascinating new report update shows.

The latest 39-page update to the National Register of Exonerations lists 1,050 cases in which the convicted have been exonerated. The report update notes, in particular, a "dramatic increase in the number and the proportion of exonerations that prosecutors or police participated in obtaining." To wit: Of the 63 exonerations in 2012, prosecutors or police initiated or cooperated in 34, or 54 percent.

The Registry is a joint project of the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law.
