Texas Lets The Poor Burn To Keep The Rich Cool

This is even more disgusting because Texans have chosen to elect anti-environmental politicians who have helped block efforts to reduce global warming/climate change.

Texas has, like much of the country, experienced a brutal heat wave this year. Triple digit temperatures are a mortal threat to the elderly. children and other vulnerable citizens and Texas has a system in place to protect those who cannot afford the excessive electrical costs associated with keeping cool (and alive). All residents that pay for their utilities pay a little extra to subsidize the poor in times of high energy costs like a vicious heat wave.

Without question, this saves lives and makes me wonder if my home state of New York has such a forward thinking program in place. The embarrassment of being out-progressived by Texas might prove fatal to a filthy liberal scum like me.

But lest someone accuse them of the dreaded “socialism!!,” the Republican Texas legislature has taken steps to remedy this situation:

From RawReplay.com:

CBS reports that the Texas legislature has repeatedly approved raiding the fund in order to balance its budget without raising taxes. By 2013, there will be $900 million sitting unspent, with no plans to ever pay it out.

This isn’t because there is a huge surplus, they’re letting people go without AC during a heat wave simply to avoid having to raise any taxes. Even on the richest people in the state. If even one single person dies because of this, that stolen money is blood money. And it is stolen money. If you donate money to feed the poor and someone uses it to buy a car that is fraud and highly illegal.

But what’s a little fraud if the rich don’t have their taxes raised, right? It’s just poor people left to suffer and die needlessly, so who cares? It’s not like they’re REAL people like a corporation or anything…
