A family has been left devastated after one of their baby cows died after eating a discarded birthday balloon.

Six-month-old Lisa, who was in a field in Beckingham, near Newark, became ill after eating the party item, much to the concern of her owners.

Despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save her, and on Friday, May 8, the calf died after a week long battle to survive.

One of her owners, Sharon Lay, said it was heartbreaking to see such a "needless" death and is urging people to be more careful about they do with their rubbish.

"After she had died we found she was wet - her mum had been licking her trying to wake her up," Sharon said.

"She wouldn't leave her side. When we were taking Lisa away her mum was running around the tractor trying to get it to stop.

Sharon says she wants people to be more aware of what they are doing when disposing of rubbish, whether that be balloons or other items.

"I know that some people accidentally let go of balloons, but some people just let them go with no idea where they will land," she said.

"People need to be more conscious of what they're doing. If they land in a field like this one has then a cow or a deer or some other animal will eat it and will die.
