I would have been astounded if China had honored its promises on Hong Kong. I don't believe they should have been allowed to take it over because of a 100 year old contract. It is not unusual for country boundaries to change over the course of time. It should have been the choice of Hong Kong's residents whether they wanted to return to the rule of China.
