Big business contributes much more to politicians than labor unions

Another of the many lies told by the Republican right: Labor unions spend as much on politics as corporations. In fact, union spending is a tiny and declining fraction of corporate spending. In the 2012 elections, for example, the Koch brothers’ political network alone spent more than $400 million. This sum was more than twice the political spending of the ten largest labor unions put together.

Since the Reagan administration, a major goal of the right has been to destroy labor unions in America, whose members were 27% of private-sector workers in 1980 and are now fewer that 7%.
