Republicans are calling it the ‘Protect Life Act’ but this bill doesn’t protect life at all. It allows doctors and hospitals to let it slip away with no consequences whatsoever. On Thursday, House Republicans passed a bill that gives medical professionals the right to let a pregnant woman die rather than perform an abortion to save her life.

Other provisions permit states to enact laws that would allow health plans to refuse to cover women’s preventive services, including birth control which effectively repeals a key protection in the Affordable Care Act championed by President Obama and the Democratic 111th Congress.

And finally, the bill overrides protections for pregnant women under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act which was passed in 1986 and signed by President Ronald Reagan. This law ensures public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay, including women in active labor. Hospitals must stabilize a pregnant patient who, for example, is facing an emergency or life-threatening pregnancy and either treat her even if it means performing an emergency abortion, or if the hospital or staff objects, to transfer her to another facility that will treat her.
